Birdbaths used for memorials and cremation urns
When I began making the birdbaths in 1986 I was sure I wanted them to be about stillness and tenderness, and that I'd use a certain austerity to serve those aims. Additional to being birdbaths these pieces may now serve two further roles. Firstly as a memorial and secondly as a cremation urn for ashes. Their physical scale is massive. Not only are the solid oak bases very heavy but the birdbaths are 'chunky' in construction. Norman and Saxon fonts and architecture have played a part in their conception, as has landscape. It is often in a dormant Winter garden that these pieces look their best.
Their fabric is Salt glazed ceramic which makes them quite un-porous. Should the water in them freeze, their upper forms are such it has room to expand outwards and upwards.
To become a Memorial piece there need only be added a metal plaque with name and dates attached to the base.
And since the top ceramic section is a hollow form with an opening in its base, this requires only the addition of a stopper fitting for it to become an urn. On this may be inscribed an individual's name and dates. Again a metal plaque may be attached to the base.
Initially we can send reliable digital images of current stock by email to help you to an informed choice. Depending on where you live you may instead decide to visit the workshop to see pieces for yourself.
